If that headline sounds unusual, it’s nowhere near as unusual as what’s floating around in your drinking water. Every day, millions of pharmaceutical drugs that have expired or gone unused make their way into your drinking water. Even veterinary drugs have been known to crop up in the water you drink, as a result of runoff from farms and fields.
While you may have heard that remnants of over-the-counter drugs have commonly been found in water, what you may not know is that drugs to treat more serious conditions, such as epilepsy, heart conditions, mental disorders and chronic pain, have also trickled into the water supply.

And if that wasn’t bad enough, precious little testing has been done to determine the side effects of long-term ingestion of water that has been contaminated by residual amounts of pharmaceutical drugs. So even if you aren’t feeling any ill effects now, that doesn’t mean the long-term situation will be the same.
Scared? You should be. There is still no required test available to find pharmaceutical drugs in your drinking supply. With this in mind, it’s now up to us to protect the water we consume from the unknown effects of serious prescriptions, over the counter drugs and animal medicines.
